General description: A C-band polarimetric scatterometer was used to collect the backscattering signatures of new ice, first year ice, and multiyear ice in as many forms as possible during the fall freeze-up and winter period in Southern Beaufort Sea and Amundsen Gulf. This instrument is mounted on the port side of the ship (CCGS Amundsen) and the backscattering signatures were collected in conjunction with geophysical sampling of the region that was scanned in an attempt to provide the physical reasons for the electromagnetic interactions. This variable will be used in modeling studies and in coordinating in situ measurements with satellite data. Methology: The scatterometer measured the backscatter from the surface of interest. Incidence angles ranged from 20 to 60 degrees in 5 degree steps, with a swath of 60 degrees in the azimuth. Several scans were collected for statistical purposes (generally 5). Either during the scans, or immediately afterwards, geophysical sampling was performed in and around the region of the scan in order to gather ground truth data. Geophysical data are summarized in three metadata forms: CCIN Reference No 10108, 10097 and 1555. Data type: The dataset contains unprocessed and processed polarimetric data as a function of incidence angle.

Raw backscatter data were collected from a CT25K ceilometer. A ceilometer is a device that uses a laser or other light source to determine the height of a cloud base. Ceilometers can also be used to measure the aerosol concentration within the atmosphere. Sampling took place from July to November 2009 in the southern Beaufort Sea and the Amundsen Gulf (Canadian Arctic) during the CFL cruise onboard the CCGS Amundsen icebreaker. The Circumpolar Flaw Lead System Study (CFL) is an IPY-funded project. Data were collected (1) during the ship transit, (2) set transects, (3) at several stations where we stayed 24 hours, and (4) at multi-day drift stations. The instrument was running continuously during the CFL project, with only minor interruptions for maintenance activities.

Ceilometers can also be used to measure the aerosol concentration within the atmosphere. Sampling took place from in the Southern Beaufort Sea and the Amundsen Gulf (Canadian Arctic) during the ArcticNet / BP Partnership cruise onboard the CCGS Amundsen. Ceilometers can also be used to measure the aerosol concentration within the atmosphere. Sampling took place from May to October 2016 in the Beaufort Sea, Northwest Passage, Baffin Bay (Canadian Arctic) during the cruise onboard the CCGS Amundsen icebreaker. The CT25K is designed to detect three cloud layers simultaneously up to around 18 000 ft, given suitable conditions. Besides cloud layers, it detects whether there is precipitation or other obstruction to vision. Output files were created hourly by the system and are in ASCII format.

Continuous measurements of emissivity at 89 and 37 GHz frequencies in vertical and horizontal polarizations at a fixed elevation angle of 55 degrees during transit and scanning elevation angles of 30-150 degrees at every station were acquired. The radiometers were installed at the 200 level on the CCGS Amundsen icebreaker on the port side. Generally the instruments acquired data at the fixed elevation angle during transit, and 3-5 scans were performed at every station along with auxiliary data collection (GPS data, geographic location of the station, photographs of the same field of view, air temperature, wind data, atmospheric conditions, surface characteristics, etc.). The acquired data are in binary format which is produced for every scan and fixed modes. The time in the data logger is generally set to UTC. An example filename would be 'RADDAT-2007-11-06-122647.DAT'.
