ProMis - Production and export of phytoplankton-derived organic matter in the changing Arctic Ocean – Role of parasites, saprotrophs and mineral ballasting during SAS21 on IB Oden
Sampling was conducted on IB Oden during the Synoptic Arctic Survey from July-September 2021 for microbial interactions and organic matter export. Sea ice, meltponds and the water column were sampled for fungal DNA/RNA, fungal lipids, Transparent Exopolymer Particles, gypsum and microscopy of fungi.

- Purpose
-
The project aimed to understand how fungi influence organic matter production and degradation by their saprotrophic and parasitic lifestyles and how the microbial interactions changed across the Central Arctic Ocean. In addition, samples for gypsum and TEP were taken in order to establish whether the crystals and organic particles stick together and have the potential to greatly increase the organic carbon export over ice covered seas.
