Sea ice, meltponds and the water column were sampled for fungal DNA/RNA, fungal lipids, Transparent Exopolymer Particles, gypsum and microscopy of fungi. The project aimed to understand how fungi influence organic matter production and degradation by their saprotrophic and parasitic lifestyles and how the microbial interactions changed across the Central Arctic Ocean. In addition, samples for gypsum and TEP were taken in order to establish whether the crystals and organic particles stick together and have the potential to greatly increase the organic carbon export over ice covered seas.
