Sediment from Hudson Bay was collected with boxcores deployed from the CCGS Amundsen. The boxcores were immediately sectioned at 1 cm (top 10 cm), 2 cm (10 cm to 20 cm depth), or 5 cm (depth > 20 cm) intervals, and aliquoted for a variety of analyses. Sediment samples were then frozen (-20 Celsius) while onboard for approximately 1 month, followed by freeze-drying at the Freshwater Institute, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Freeze-dried sediment was stored at room temperature in the dark. Rock Eval pyrolysis of freeze dried sediment samples was performed at the Geological Survey of Canada using a Rock Eval 6 pyrolysis. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the utility of information provided by Rock Eval analysis of recent marine sediments to characterize the sources and state of preservation of modern sedimentary organic matter. This type of characterization will permit improved interpretations of modern sedimentary organic matter from analyses by Rock Eval pyrolysis by validating interpretations based on kerogen (a mixture of organic chemical compounds that make up a portion of the organic matter in sedimentary rocks) characteristics, and by identifying ambiguous data characteristics that can be resolved through the use of companion elementary analyses. Upon retrieving the sediment to the ship, it was sub-sectioned into layers, and each layer sub-sectioned into smaller portions for separate chemical analysis. The sediment samples were then completely dried to remove moisture, and then analyzed by Rock Eval pyrolysis. This procedure slowly heats up the sediment and burns the organic matter, and determines the amount of organic matter in the sediment by measuring the intensity of the flame at specific temperatures. The gradual burning of organic matter along a gradient of increasing temperature produces a yield curve that can be interpreted to determine characteristics of the original organic matter in the sediment.
