Persistent Organic Contaminants in Canadian Archipelago air, zooplankton and water : Beaufort Sea, 2016
Air, water (grab and passive) and zooplankton samples were collected from on board the CCGS Amundsen in the summer of 2016 as a part of ArcticNet and the Northern Contaminants Program. These samples were collected to determine the occurrence and levels of legacy pesticides and new and emerging priority compounds under the Canadian Chemical Management Plan. Additionally, archived sediment and filtered water samples were screened for and found microplastics.

- Purpose
-
The objectives of this project are: 1) to continue measuring levels and trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Canadian arctic air, zooplankton and water; 2) to develop a passive water monitoring program for POPs in the Beaufort Sea 3) to screen for new and emerging compounds of concern in the Canadian arctic and 4) screen for occurrence of microplastics in arctic sediment and water.

Summary: In collaboration with ArcticNet and the Northern Contaminants program (NCP-INAC) we collected air, water and zooplankton samples for persistent organic contaminants in the Canadian Archipelago in the summer of 2016. The contaminants we are focusing on are pesticides, flame retardants, fluorine containing compounds and fossil fuel related compounds. The major concern with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is that they are taken up by arctic biota including fish, seals and whales so when traditional foods are eaten, northerners are exposed. We also took samples our of the archived to screen for plastic debris in water and sediment. Research Program(s): ArcticNet,NCP.
