Multibeam sonar mapping in outer Frobisher Bay, 2017-2018

Multibeam sonar data and accompanying acoustic sub-bottom profile data were collected using the multibeam echosounder aboard the scientific icebreaker CCGS Amundsen. Particular focus in 2017 and 2018 mapping was on deep water troughs with apparent mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGL) in the northwest portion of outer Frobisher bay, and in the deep fault-bounded southwest margin of outer Frobisher bay.

Purpose

Multibeam sonar mapping in outer Frobisher Bay ultimately aims to map the entire navigable portion of the bay, for purposes of identifying geomorphic features, classifying bottom types, identifiying potential marine geohazards, and identifying potentially sensitive benthic habitats that might need protection in the face of infrastructure development or resource extraction.
