The sonar was operated during a 24 hours dedicated survey on July 25th and 26th. The sonar transducer was lowered 2.5 feet below the hull through a gate-valve. The cylindrical 256-elements transducer allows both a horizontal and a vertical sound transmission, and the omni-directional sonar beam can be tilted from +10 to -60 degrees to scan a large portion of the water column. The raw acoustic data were saved onto an external drive and print screens of interesting targets (fish schools and/or marine mammals) were recorded. Arctic cod is the most abundant and dominant fish in Arctic marine food web, transferring the energy from zooplankton to top predators. In the Canadian Arctic, the large biomass of this key species that must exist to support predators¿ consumption estimates has eluded detection. Sampling difficulties in the harsh environment usually limit studies of Arctic cod to coastal shallow waters during summer and to the immediate under-ice water. Previous studies suggest that Arctic cod remain in the upper layer of the water column in the summer/fall; however, detecting Arctic cod in the surface waters using echosounder-based techniques has proven challenging. Here, the use of a fisheries sonar to detect fish aggregations near the surface is investigated. In addition to the larger coverage relative to that of an echosounder, fisheries sonars allow detection of fish up to 1 m below the ocean surface and at distances of up to 2 km from the vessel, thereby reducing biases related to vessel. The purpose of this study is to detect Arctic cod aggregations near the surface using the SX90 sonar, and to document their distribution, size and migration patterns.
